From The Big Lebowski to Pineapple Express and back again, Stoner movies are great for kicking back and chilling. High or low, you are in for a good night with my top five best movies to watch high. Grab your stash and some munchies, park yourself on the couch and put your feet up.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
A quality list of stoner movies has to mention Jay and Silent Bob. This movie is packed full of cameos, loaded with stoner humor with some truly brilliant one-liners. With endless references to ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and set in the same universe as the movie ‘Clerks’ the duo embark on a journey to wreck a big-screen movie based on the comic ‘Bluntman and Chronic’ which was originally based on them.
How High (2001)
How High do you have to be to get into college? Try fertilizing your weed crop with your smart friend’s ashes and getting high enough to speak to him from the other side. Silas (Method Man) and Jamal (Redman) ace their “THC” (Testing for Higher Credentials) exam with help from the ghost of their best friend Ivory. They run riot over Harvard, lose their magic-afterlife-contacting pot, almost fail their mid-terms. They go on to develop a truth serum, get invited to the alumni party and Jamal gets the girl of his dreams.
Pineapple Express (2008)
The words ‘Stoner’ and ‘Action Comedy’ don’t normally go together, but that’s exactly what Pineapple Express is. This is one of the best movies to watch high in my opinion. With a poster reminiscent of a zombie apocalypse movie and from the same guys behind ‘Superbad‘ you know you’re in for a good time. The main character Dale stumbles across a murder in progress while making a delivery for his dealer Saul. With brilliant acting, amazing one-liners and all of the stoner action you would expect, this movie can not be summed up in so few words. Grab a bong and some high grade and you are all set for this epic stoner movie.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
After a case of mistaken identity Jeffery “The Dude” Lebowski a skilled slacker and ten-pin bowler becomes embroiled in a kidnapping. There is a ransom demand, a parade of porn stars in sports cars and a gang of angry thugs to deal with. While the movie flopped at the U.S. box office it has since become a cult classic. “The Dude” brings some epic one-liners like “This is a very complicated case, Maude. You know, a lotta ins, lotta outs, lotta what-have-you’s” and “Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man”.
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)
Saving my absolute favorite till last. Young Keanu Reeves hasn’t quite figured out how to dodge bullets yet, but that doesn’t stop him from setting off through time to get a good grade on his totally bogus history report.
Ted “Theodore” Logan (Keanu Reeves) and Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) stumble through history, dragging Napoleon back to the present time, flirt with princesses in medieval London (nearly getting themselves beheaded) and mispronounce “So-crates” for 89 glorious minutes. You’ll learn more about history from this movie than in any school room. There is also a life lesson to be learned “be excellent to each other and PARTY ON, DUDES!”
